No topic in this trade is buried under more myth, gatekeeping, and tool-marketing than immo work. Strip that away and it's just a few decisions made in the right order. Here's what actually happens on the bench — and where good techs still get burned.

Three questions decide the whole job

  • What job is it, really? Adding a key is a different animal than all-keys-lost, and both are different from a replaced or cloned module. Name it before you plug in.
  • What's the security architecture? Fixed transponder, rolling code, PIN/CS/SK, online-auth vs offline — the generation dictates the path and the tool.
  • Can you actually get the secret? PIN / incode / CS — do you read it, calculate it, pull it from the dealer, or does the tool do it on the fly? If you can't get it, nothing else matters.
Rule #1: identify the exact platform and security generation first. The wrong assumption there doesn't just slow the job — it's how modules get bricked.

Step 2The paths that actually work

Add a key (working key present)

Easiest win
  • Often a guided on-tool procedure — the system authenticates with the existing key.
  • Some platforms still want the PIN/CS even to add. Confirm before you promise a turnaround.

All keys lost

Needs the secret
  • You need the PIN / incode / CS — read it, calculate it, or pull it by VIN.
  • Some need an EEPROM/MCU read or a security-access time window. Plan the whole path before you start.

Module / ECU replaced

Sync / marry
  • A new part is a stranger — it has to be married to the immo, keys, and often the VIN/mileage.
  • Miss a sync step and you get a running-then-stall, or no-crank, that looks like a hardware fault.

Clone the module

Plug & play
  • Read the source EEPROM/flash + immo data, write it to a virgin part.
  • The clone is an exact twin — no online authorization, keys keep working. Great for dead clusters/ECUs.

Reading the chip directly

When in-circuit fails
  • When the tool can't do it OBD, pull the data off the chip — 93/95-series EEPROM, MC9S12, Tricore, etc.
  • Back up the original dump first, always. That file is your undo button.
Where jobs go sideways

The five ways techs brick a good module

  • Wrong security generation assumed → you write the wrong data to the right-looking part. Identify first, always.
  • Voltage sags mid-write → a corrupt flash and a dead module. Put it on a stable supply, never a marginal battery.
  • No backup of the original dump → nothing to fall back to when the write goes wrong.
  • Aftermarket/weak transponders → programs fine, then won't start cold or reads intermittently.
  • "Virgin" parts that aren't → a used part with someone else's data fights every sync. Verify it's actually blank.

  2. Stable power, not "the battery's probably fine"A clean, held voltage during any write. This single habit prevents most bricks.
  3. Verify the transponder before you cut or programConfirm the chip type matches the platform — a wrong or weak chip programs but won't behave.
  4. Prove all keys + relearn before it leavesCycle every key, confirm start, complete the relearn. Don't find the second-key problem in the customer's driveway.
