Chasing a Parasitic Draw
the battery that dies overnight

Dead every morning, fine all day. Something on the car won't go to sleep and it's quietly emptying the battery. Chase it wrong and you'll pull fuses for an hour and learn nothing. Here's the method that finds it every time.

Start here

Know the number before you hunt

  • A healthy car, fully asleep, draws well under ~50 mA (0.05 A). Exact spec varies — some modules idle a little higher — but tens of milliamps is normal; hundreds is a problem.
  • Modules stay awake for minutes after you lock it and walk away. Measure too soon and you're reading a normal wake current, not a fault.
  • A draw is a circuit that stayed powered. Your whole job is to find which one — without waking everything back up every time you touch the car.
Rule #1: let the car go to sleep first, then measure. Patience up front saves an hour of chasing ghosts.

  • Hook upLow-current ammeter in series (or a clamp on the battery/ground lead) — an inline meter is most accurate; a clamp won't reset the sleep timer
  • Wait20–40+ minutes for every module to time out and sleep — this is the step everyone skips

Step 2The usual suspects

A module that won't sleep

Most common
  • One control module stays awake — often triggered by a network fault (a U-code keeping the bus alive).
  • If the draw only appears when a door/trunk is touched, a module is refusing to time out. Cross-check with a lost-comm scan.

Aftermarket accessories

Check first
  • Amps, dash cams, alarms, remote starts, trackers — wired to constant power and left "on."
  • A sloppy install is the #1 real-world cause. Ask what's been added, then find its power tap.

Stuck relay or lamp

Simple, missed
  • A glovebox, trunk, underhood, or vanity lamp that never shuts off. Warm bulb = it's live.
  • A relay welded closed keeps a whole circuit powered. Swap or pull it and watch the draw drop.

Chafed / shorted wiring

The slow burn
  • A wire rubbed to ground pulls current 24/7. Often shows near harness pass-throughs and grounds.
  • Intermittent draws that come and go with vibration or weather point here.
Where techs go wrong

The traps that waste the hour

  • Measuring before it sleeps. You read 400 mA of modules waking, condemn a "draw," and it was never real.
  • Opening a door to pull fuses. You just reset the sleep timer and woke everything. Use the voltage-drop-across-the-fuse method so you never break the circuit.
  • Yanking the negative to "test." Disconnecting reboots modules and can wipe the very state that reveals the fault. Measure live.
  • Stopping at the first thing you find. There can be more than one. Confirm the draw is actually gone, not just lower.

  2. Voltage-drop across each fuseWith the meter on mV, probe both test points of each live fuse. A powered circuit with current flowing drops a tiny voltage across the fuse — no need to pull it and wake the car.
  3. The fuse with the drop owns the circuitFind the fuse showing mV and you've found the loaded circuit. Now trace it to the stuck module, relay, or accessory.
  4. Fix it and re-verify asleepRepair, let it sleep again, and confirm the draw is back in spec. Overnight test to be sure it holds.
