Why recordings lag — or balloon into giant files

  • Software encoding. If the recorder compresses on your CPU (the "x264" setting), fast, detailed content — like a live waveform — pegs the processor and drops frames. That's the choppiness.
  • Lossless / sky-high bitrate. That's the movie-sized file that eats your drive.
The fix: switch to hardware encoding. Your GPU has a dedicated video-encoder chip that does the same job while barely touching the CPU — same recording, a fraction of the load, files 5–10× smaller.

  1. Search Snipping Tool and open it
  2. Click the Record (camcorder) icon
  3. Drag to select your screen area
  4. Toggle the microphone ON for voiceover
  5. Start → Stop → it saves an .mp4

Best for: full production — overlays, webcam, multiple sources. If it was choppy before, this is why:

  • Settings → Output: Encoder = hardware (NVENC / QuickSync / AMD) — never x264
  • Bitrate ~12,000 Kbps
  • Use Window Capture, 1080p, 30 fps

The hard case

Live scope waveforms? Don't screen-record them.

Fine lines plus fast motion is the single worst thing for a real-time recorder. Fighting it on the same laptop that's running the scope is a losing game. Instead:

  • Film the scope screen with your phone. Zero load on the laptop — and honestly it looks more real: your hands, your bench, your trace.
  • Use the scope's own export. PicoScope saves, replays, and exports traces directly — cleaner than grabbing the live view.
  • Capture, then record the replay. Freeze or slow-replay the captured waveform — no motion means it records perfectly smooth.
